A simple monthly budget

You don't need a spreadsheet to start. Three numbers get you most of the way.

1. Money in

Add up everything you take home in a month - jobs, side gigs, benefits.

2. Money out (fixed)

List the bills that stay about the same: rent, phone, transportation, insurance.

3. Money out (flexible)

Estimate what you spend on food, gas, and everyday extras.

Find your number

Money in minus money out is what's left. If it's positive, send some to savings. If it's negative, look at the flexible list first for small cuts.

Tip: Review it once a month. Budgets are meant to change as life changes.
